Gas Stations/Petrol Stands
There are two types of gas stations in Japan: self-serve (セルフ) and full service (フル). Especially more rural areas, many stations do NOT offer 24-hour service. Some close as early as 7pm, and won’t reopen until 8am. Be sure to check your local stations and plan accordingly.
How to use (full service)
Follow the station attendant’s instructions. Hand them either cash or card, and let them know how much you would like to use. If you would like a full tank, ask for “mantan.”
How to use (self-serve)
Select either cash (現金) or credit card (クレジットカード). Many places only take cash. There are typically three kinds of gas available: regular (レギュラー), high octane (ハイオク), and diesel oil (軽油). Be sure to double-check which kind your car uses to prevent damage to the car. Insert cash or card and press the confirm button. Fill up, and take your receipt and change.
