Shimao Toshio and Odaka

更新日:2021年03月26日

Shimao Toshio was born in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, in 1917. He was the oldest son of his father Shiro and his mother Toshi. Both of his parents were from Odaka, with Shiro from Oi and his Toshi from Okada. Shiro ran a silk textile export business. Toshi’s maiden name was Inoue.

The Shimao family home in Yokohama was completely destroyed by fire in the Great Kanto earthquake of 1923, but at that time the family had all gone to Odaka to visit Toshio, who had been recovering from an illness, and were able to evacuate successfully.

Shimao Toshio often visited Odaka, fondly calling it his hometown. He spent his childhood in Odaka, listening to stories from his mother and his grandmother Kiku and meeting with his cousins. This had a great impact on his writings later on in his life.

Shimao passed away on November 12, 1986, in Kagoshima City due to a hemorrhagic stroke. He was 69 years old when he passed. His remains were placed in a graveyard, after a Buddhist memorial service by his eldest son Shinzo and Shinzo’s wife in the Kinsho Temple.
