1917 Born as eldest son to father Shinzo and mother Toshi. Russian Revolution.
1923 Family had been in Odaka to visit Toshio, who was recovering from an illness, at the time of the disaster. They were able to evacuate the hardships the earthquake brought. Great Kanto earthquake of 1923.
1929 Transferred to Kobe Primary School.  
1930 Entered Hyogo Prefectural 1st Kobe Commercial School.  
1936 Entered Nagasaki Commercial College.  
1938 Published “おキイの貞操とマコ” (Okii no Teisou to Mako), but was penalized with a sales ban. Interrogated in the Nagasaki police station special interrogation room.  
1939 Graduated from Nagasaki Commercial College. Selected for honorable mention in the magazine “Scientific Knowledge” novel prize competition for his work entitled “お紀枝” (Okishi). Launched “こおろ” (Kooro), later named “こをろ” (Ko wo Ro). Start of WWII.
1940 Entered Kyushu Imperial University, Faculty of Law and Literature, Economics Department.  
1941 Withdrew from the Economics Department. Reenrolled at the same school in the Liberal Arts Department, majoring in Asian history. Start of conflict between Japan and the US.
1943 Graduated early from university, applied to be student in navy reserve. Recruited into the general military department. Entered the Lushun navy reserve student education division. Self-published 70 copies of “Account of Young Years” (幼年記, Younenki). Student soldier mobilization.
1944 Appointed commanding officer of the 18th Shinyo unit, a naval suicide attack squadron. Relocated to the Nominoura military base in Kakeromajima, Amami, Kagoshima. Met Ohira Miho.  
1945 Received orders to attack, but the war ended while he was still on stand-by. Japan surrender.
1946 Married Ohira Miho.  
1948 Participated as the second writer of “Modern Literature” (近代文学, Kindai Bungaku). Eldest son Shinzo born.  
1950 Received the first Postwar Literature Prize for “A Tale of Leaving a Lonely Island” (出孤島記, Shutsukotou Ki). Eldest daughter Maya born. Start of Korean War.
1956 Became part-time lecturer at Kagoshima Prefectural Oshima High School and  Kagoshima Prefectural Oshima Technical High School. Received Catholic baptism at Seishin Church in Naze City (now Amami City). Hungarian Revolution.
1958 Kagoshima Prefectural Library Amami Annex opened, took up post as its first superintendent.  
1960 Published “The Sting of Death” (死の棘, Shi no Toge).Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan. Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan.
1961 Received the 1960 11th Minister of Education Award for Art (Literature Division).  
1964 Published “The Departure Finally Never Came” (出発は遂に訪れず, Shuppatsu wa Tsuini Otozurezu). Tokyo Olympics.
1965 Published “The Shortening of the Days” (日のちぢまり, Hi no Chijimari). Bombing of North Vietnam.
1970 Travelled around the Soviet Union and East Germany from fall to winter.  
1972 Published “Silhouette through Frosted Glass (硝子障子のシルエット, Garasu Shouji no Shiruetto). Received the Mainichi Publishing Culture Award.  
1975 Published “Chasing the Shadows of Dreams” (夢のかげを求めて, Yume no Kage wo Motomete). End of Vietnam War.
1976 Published “鬼剥げ”, (Onihage). Lockheed bribery scandals.
1977 Awarded Tanizaki Junichiro Prize for “The Passing Days” (日の移ろい, Hi no Utsuroi).  
1978 Awarded Yomiuri Literary Prize and Japanese Literature Grand Prize for “The Sting of Death.” Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Japan and the People’s Republic of China.
1981 Awarded Japanese Academy of Arts Prize. Became member of the academy.  
1983 Received Kawabata Yasunari Award for “The Cove in the Bay” (湾内の入り江, Wannai no Irie).  
1985 Published “The Dregs of Dreams” (夢屑, Yume Kuzu), and “Student on the Torpedo Boat” (魚雷艇学生, Gyoraitei Gakusei). Awarded Noma Literary Prize.  
1986 Passed away due to a hemorrhagic stroke, age 69. Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
