1917 | 13 | March: Finished 1st year of Odaka Elementary School advanced course. April: Entered Fukushima Prefectural Soma Junior High School. |
1920 | 16 | February: Became leader in student strike with the aim of investigating the punishment of violence with regards to the violence committed by upperclassmen against lowerclassmen. October 9: Participated in the Tohoku Junior High School Association 1st Oratorical Meeting, hosted by the 2nd High School Shoushikai Debate Club, as the representative of the Soma Junior High School Debate Club. Won 1st place. The subject of his speech was “A Mind Devoted to Solitude” (孤独に徹する心, Kodoku ni Tessuru Kokoro). November: Invited to participate in the Prefectural Secondary School Association 2nd Oratory Tournament, hosted by the Tohoku Literature Association. The subject of his speech was “A Soliloquy on the Shade of the Poplar Tree” (ポプラ樹陰の独語, Popura Juin no Dokugo). |

1923 | 19 | Published “Thoughts of a Lonely Night” (或寂しき夜の想片, Aru Sabishiki Yoru no Souhen) in the paper “尚志” (Shoushi). The material was considered to have too dark a view of life and society, and so the school authorities ordered the distribution of “Shoushi” to be prohibited since it had published the work. Became one of the founding members of the 2nd High School Social Thought Research Society. |
1924 | 20 | March: Graduated from 2nd High School. April: Entered the Kyoto Imperial University, literature department, burning with the desire to be taught by people such as philosophy professor Nishida Kitaro and sociology professor Yoneda Shotaro. Entered the Kyoto Imperial University Social Science Research Society. |
1925 | 21 | April: Transferred to the economics department, believing the study of economics to be important to confronting societal contradictions. |
1926 | 22 | January: Arrested in the Japan Student Social Studies Federation Incident in the first incident related to the violation of the Peace Preservation Law. |
1927 | 23 | May 30: Received guilty verdict from the Kyoto district court (first hearing), sentenced to 10 months of incarceration. Voluntarily dropped out of Kyoto Imperial university because of this verdict. From then on, engaged in research of constitutional law and political science. June 16: Married Kurihara Toshiko. |
1929 | 25 | February – August: Engaged in editing “Study of Social Issues” (社会問題研究, Shakai Mondai Kenkyuu), entrusted to him by Kawakami Hajime. Imprisoned at the Industry and Labor Investigation Site. |
1930 | 26 | May 30: Final appeal to highest court over the Japan Student Social Studies Federation Incident rejected. |
1935 | 30 | September: Became assistant in the Japan Arts Promotion Subcommittee. |
