Hinamatsuri: Kyoho Hina Dolls
Hinamatsuri, known in English as the Japanese Doll Festival or Girls’ Day, is celebrated in May by displaying hina dolls. These dolls are traditionally given as a gift to baby girls on their first festival, as well as to newly-wed brides.
The Minamisoma Museum is currently displaying a pair of large seated hina dolls from the Kyoho era (1716-1736), in a style that became popular in the middle of the Edo Period.
