10 Years After the Earthquake: Minamisoma’s Progress
In commemoration of 10 years passing since the 2011 Great Tohoku Earthquake, here is a look back on Minamisoma’s restoration and recovery through pictures of its residents.
2011
March
- 2:46pm – Great Tohoku Earthquake begins (3/11)
- Tremors registered at 6 lower on the Shindo scale, major tsunami warning issued (3/11)
- Evacuation order expanded to area within a 10km radius of the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant; hydrogen explosion in power plant unit 1, evacuation order expanded to area within 20km radius (3/12)
- Hydrogen explosion in power plant unit 3 (3/14)
- Strange noise heard from power plant unit 2, orders to shelter indoors issued to area within 30km radius; guided group evacuation by bus initiated (3/15)
April
- Temporary disaster FM broadcast station “Minamisoma Disaster FM” (nicknamed “Minamisoma Hibari FM”) established
- Area within 20km radius declared hazard area; indoor shelter orders lifted for area in 20-30km radius, set as planned evacuation areas and emergency planned evacuation areas
- ES/JHS outside the 30km radius reopened in Kashima
- Fukushima City Branch Office opened in Fukushima City Hall
