Water Pipes in Winter

更新日:2021年01月26日

We have to be extra careful with our waterways during the winter season. If the temperature of the pipes drops below 4℃, there is a strong possibility that they will freeze.

Faucets or water meters freezing can lead to water leaks and even explosions. Please take measures to prevent freezing in your home.

Tips for Preventing Freezing

Wrap the pipes running on the outside of your home in heat insulating material. You can even use cloths or blankets. Wrap plastic on top of those to prevent them from getting wet.

For especially cold nights, or if you are planning to be gone for a while, please drain your water pipes.

(Note) You can drain the pipes by using the orange valve in your meter box.

  1. Completely shut the valve. Water may spout out of the valve as you turn it, but keep turning until it is completely shut.
  2. Open the faucets in your house to allow air to enter the pipes, and flush the toilets to empty their tanks.
  3. You can check that air has entered the pipes by opening the waterway faucet and listening for a hissing sound.

If the Waterway is Frozen

Wrap the frozen pipe or faucet in a towel, and allow a little lukewarm water at a time to pass through. (DO NOT USE HOT WATER. There is a chance this could cause an explosion.)

If water won’t come out even after trying this, please contact a designated plumbing/construction company to unfreeze your pipes.
