Support for Voluntary Return of Elderly Driver's Licenses

In order to reduce the number of traffic accidents involving the elderly, the city is implementing the “Voluntary Driver’s License Return Support Project” that promotes elderly people to voluntarily return their driver’s license.

Those to whom all of the following apply.

• Those who are 65 years and older when returning their license
• Those who have an address within Minamisoma at the time of applying

Taxi coupons worth 20,000 yen (1 coupon = 500 yen x 40 coupons)

(NOTE) The taxi coupons can only be used within three years from the issuance date before they expire.

Limited to 1 time per person

(NOTE) No additional coupons or reissuances will be given.

First, please apply for the “Voluntary Return of Driver’s License” with the prefectural police, and then apply for the “Voluntary Return of Driver’s License for the Elderly” at city hall.

One of the following locations:

Minamisoma Police Station

Hours: 8:30am to 2:00pm

Driver's License Center

Hours: 8:30am to 12:00pm, 1:00pm to 2:00pm

(NOTE) It takes about 1 hour to complete the procedure at the Minamisoma Police Station, so please allow for enough time.

(NOTE) Minamisoma Police Station is open only on weekdays. You can apply at the Fukushima Driver's License Center on Sundays as well as weekdays. (If you apply on Sunday, please contact the Fukushima Driver's License Center (024-591-4381) at least 2 days in advance.)

(NOTE) If you are a member of the Road Safety Association, then there will be no application fees.

• Please be sure to complete the procedure yourself.
• A driver's license revocation notice will be issued. (issued on the same day)
• To use the taxi coupons, you will need a "driver's history certificate (Unten Keireki Shoumeisho/運転経歴証明書)", so be sure to apply for one.

(NOTE) If you apply at the Minamisoma Police Station, it will take about 2 weeks to issue your driver’s history certificate.
