【2023/6/11】11th Minamisoma Civic Tree-Planting Festival
The 11th Minamisoma Civic Tree-Planting Festival took place on June 11 on the coastline of Kitaizumi in Haramachi Ward.
Around 1200 people from both within and outside Minamisoma participated, planting saplings of various plant varieties, including a species of laurel called “tabunoki” and Japanese evergreen oak known as “akagashi.”
The site of the festival was bustling with energy despite the rain, as participants enjoyed the various stalls that were selling local goods.
This tree-planting festival has been held every year since 2013 and aims to create a “life-protecting green disaster prevention forest” as a buffer zone against tsunamis. It is also a way to remember the victims who perished in the Great East Japan Earthquake and to pass on the experience and lessons learned from the disaster on to future generations.
