Marriage Registration
It is necessary to register if a husband and wife become legally married.
Those who must register
The married husband and wife.
Registration period
It will be effective from the date the registration is completed.
Necessary Documents
All of the following.
- Marriage Registration Form (Konin-Todoke/婚姻届)
- Two types of seals/hankos stamped on the registering person’s column.
- Government-issued photo identification document (From Category One)
- The following documents of the person changing their surname (if applicable): Individual Number Card (My Number Card), Basic Resident Register Card, Notification Card
- If you do not have a registered address within the city: a copy of your family register (Tosekitouhon/戸籍謄本) or a certificate of all matters related to your family register (Koseki Zenbu Jikou Shoumei-sho/戸籍全部事項証明書).
- Parental Consent Form (for minors only) (Fubo no Doui-sho/父母の同意書)
(NOTE) The witness column of the marriage registration must be signed and stamped by two adults.
How to register
Submit the marriage registration at the window of the municipal office of your domicile or location.

Divorce Registration
It is necessary to register if you plan on getting a divorce.
The notification period and necessary documents differ between a consented divorce and a court divorce.
A consented divorce is a divorce by discussion.
A court divorce is a divorce that has undergone mediation, refereeing, judgment, settlement, and cognovit through court.
Those who must register
Consented Divorce
The divorcing husband and wife.
Court Divorce
The proponent of the trial.
(NOTE) If you do not register within the period, the other party can also register.
Registration period
Consented Divorce

Within 10 days including the date of finalization of the trial (arbitration, trial, judgment, settlement, cognovit).

Court document copies
- In the case of mediation, a copy of the mediation record is required. (Choutei Chousho no Touhon/調停調書の謄本)
- In the case of a referee, a copy of the referee's document (Shinpan-sho Touhon/審判書謄本) and a confirmation certificate (Kakutei Shoumei-sho/確定証明書) are required.
- In the case of a judgment, a copy of the judgment (Hanketsu no Touhon/判決の謄本) and a definitive certificate (Kakutei Shoumei-sho/確定証明書) are required.
- In the case of a settlement, a copy of the settlement record (Wakai Chousho no Touhon/和解調書の謄本) is required.
- In case of a cognovit, a copy of the cognovit record (Nindaku Chousho no Touhon/認諾調書の謄本) is required.
How to register
Submit the divorce registration at the window of the municipal office of your domicile or location.
If you are a foreign national, please contact us in advance.
Consented Divorce
If you have a child who is a minor between the divorced couple, please designate one of them as having parental authority (child custody).
Court Divorce
Parental authority (child custody) is determined during mediation, trial, judgment, settlement, or cognovit.
