(1/21-3/12) Kurashina Mitsuko’s Tsunami Plant Art Exhibit
The tsunami caused by the Great East Japan earthquake on March 11, 2011, brought about large changes not only to our own daily lives but also to the realm of nature. Directly after the disaster, plants that had not been seen before in the area inundated by the tsunami responded to the changes in the soil and awoke from deep within the ground, beginning to send up spouts all around. However, as reconstruction continues, the scenery is changing every day, and the awakened plants once again fall into slumber.
In this way, there are plants that cleverly adapt to the onslaught of natural disasters like tsunamis and find a way to survive, ensuring the continuance of the plants since time immemorial through the work of their seeds.
Tokyo artist Kurashina Mitsuko visited many areas along the Tohoku coastline following the disaster including Minamisoma, meticulously gathering information about these plants that flourished in the tsunami inundation zone, then illustrating them just as carefully, calling them “tsunami plants.”
We hope that through the images made using this artist’s eyes and hands you will be able to feel the essence of the tsunami plants and the passage of time.
