(7/8-9/18) What are the Nomaoi Illustrations?
The Nomaoi illustrations, created between the Edo and Meiji periods, portray a vision of Nomaoi from ages long past and its transition into different forms over its long history. These pieces hold a lot of historical value as “living proof” of the era they were created in, tying together Nomaoi’s past and present, and remaining as messengers to the future.
In addition to the illustrations that span the Edo and Meiji periods, this special exhibit also features Nomaoi drawings done by children during COVID-19, and follows the history of this spectacular festival.
